Vatican Bans Most Homosexuals From Catholic Seminaries

Susan Jones

(CNSNews.com) - Homosexual advocacy groups are expressing disappointment, but not surprise, at a Vatican document that orders Catholic seminaries to exclude would-be priests who practice or endorse homosexuality.

"The church, while deeply respecting the people in question, cannot admit to the seminary and the sacred orders those who practice homosexuality, present deeply rooted homosexual tendencies or support so-called gay culture," said the document approved by Pope Benedict XVI.

An Italian Catholic news agency published the document on Tuesday, although it won't be officially released until Nov. 29.

Men with a "transitory" same-sex attraction (as opposed to a "deep-rooted" attraction) may be admitted to seminaries if they have been celibate for at least three years, the document said.

But, it added, "One cannot ignore the negative consequences that can stem from the ordination of people with deeply rooted homosexual tendencies."

The document reaffirms the Catholic Church's longstanding ban on ordaining active homosexuals.

'Scapegoats'

One of the nation's largest homosexual advocacy groups said the Catholic Church is rejecting the teachings of Jesus Christ and science.

"By silencing Catholics who advocate full inclusion, this decree by the church is an attempt to close down open debate," said Human Rights Campaign President Joe Solmonese.

Solmonese also rejected the notion that homosexuality among Catholic priests contributed to the church's recent pedophile scandal.

"At a time when the church should be taking responsibility for the harm created by a devastating sex abuse scandal, they are instead using gay people as scapegoats. This decree is a diversion that neither keeps children safe nor holds criminals responsible."

Likewise, the group Catholics for a Free Choice said the document marks a sad moment for the church.

CFC President Frances Kissling said church leaders are contributing to the "stigmatization of gay men," misinterpreting scientific information regarding homosexuality and acting to exclude faithful and good men who are called to the priesthood.

Kissling found it particularly disturbing that people who promote "equal rights for gays" would be excluded from the priesthood.

"Church teachings have changed over time -- from the approval of slavery to the sun being at the center of the universe -- and good and faithful Catholics have always been willing to re-examine positions based on science and compassion," Kissling said.

"No Vatican document will stop this vital human and intellectual drive for integrity. This document will only further contribute to the already tragic isolation of church leaders from the people of God."
