Huh...

So we have a debate about a debate about whether or not we're post Christian. And again I say, "Huh."

While it's true that nations can act in obedience or disobedience to God and incur blessing and consequence, I'm not sure discourse or debate in that area contributes much to relationship with God, either at the individual or societal level.

Ironically I guess, I do think this debate does, accidentally, point to a deep problem. Namely, we (conservatives, evangelicals) have: 1) Confused message form with content...and then blame others that don't agree with our tastes in form. 2) Underneath this, has been a confusion of "knowledge" of God being about a catalog of facts rather than relationship.

The path to a resurgent "national" Christianity is simple: Love God with all heart, soul and mind. Love each other. The doing of this is the difficult and great mountain we must climb. And I think it's this arena that we should be loving, leaning and teaching into.

Pastor Mohler's comments are very insightful but left me guessing as to where he really stands on the subject. More than one he would reach out to make a point and then blunt his own arrow by making a half condesention to the point made by Dr. Prothero. For instance, when Pastor Mohler's discusses the reality of the US being a Christian nation he quotes Prothero and then agrees with him before getting to the real heart of the matter: How do we define Christianity?" Pastor Mohler would be wise to go even further and define "evangelical" because I believe that definition has morphed more than a little! In point of fact, I would say both the adjectives "Christian" and "evangelical" have very real revealing meaning anymore. If you ask any Mormon, they will tell you they are both Christian and Evangelical!
