The Oklahoma Republican Party has offered to house the Ten Commandments monument that a court ordered to be removed from State Capitol property.

The American Civil Liberties Union of Oklahoma told the court that the monument was unconstitutional because Oklahoma’s Constitution states that public property cannot be used to promote a “church denomination or system of religion.”

Christian Today reports that the Oklahoma Capitol Preservation Commission voted 7-1 to remove the monument. The court ruled that the monument must be removed within 30 days, by October 12.

Although many expressed their disagreement with the decision and argued that the U.S. was founded on moral precepts as expressed in the Ten Commandments, their arguments ultimately failed.

Now, however, the Ten Commandments monument has found a new home. It will be displayed outside the Dewey Bartlett Center, the location of the Republican Party headquarters in Oklahoma City.

"It's time for the party to take a stand and support the values of Oklahomans,” Estela Hernandez, interim chairperson of the Oklahoma Republican Party stated. “[A]nd while we still feel the best place for this monument is at the State Capitol, we are happy to offer ourselves as a secondary site so that the monument is not destroyed or removed from public view,” Hernandez added.
