Shemafish, a bit of googling might spare you a bit of boggling. In 1997, Time Magazine estimated the assets of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints at $30 billion.

The Church replied, "Your estimates were greatly exaggerated. The church's income is not nearly what was reported. Also the church's assets are primarily money-consuming assets and not money-producing."

Let's assume that in the intervening decade, the Church's assets have actually grown to Time's estimate. At the end of 2006, Church membership was about 12.8 million.

Dividing net assets by number of members would give assets somewhere around $2,500 per member. I had no idea we were that poor!

Now check out what we do with all that filthy lucre!

I wonder, however, how many of the business are owned or controlled by the Mormon Church? Several years ago Walter Martin gave the extent of the Mormon empire that was in the 1970's! What it is today must be astonding!
