There was death and life in the news this week. Death in the form of the awful massacre by a deranged man at Virginia Tech, but life in the way Franklin Graham and others presented the Gospel of Jesus Christ to the living.

Death in the 40 million-plus legal abortions in this country since 1973, but life when the Supreme Court ruled 5-4 to uphold a federal law that bans the procedure in which a baby’s skull is crushed and its brains extracted as he or she emerges from the womb. Which is more grisly: aborting a fully-formed baby and denying its right to live, or mowing down dozens of college students? It’s all life.

A female acquaintance of mine who has adopted two babies from China said she disagrees with the court ruling. She said, “How would you like to be forced to have a pacemaker?” This is what passes for moral reasoning in our age. A pacemaker is a device. A baby is a human being. I noted that if her children’s mothers were not pro-life, she wouldn’t have her babies.

Thank God for President Bush’s two court appointments. Without them and Anthony Kennedy, this much needed ruling would never have occurred.
