General Petraeus Deserves Better

Cal Thomas

Syndicated Columnist

September 14, 2007

Here is what I think about General David Petraeus and his appearance before several congressional committees. I wish the general had asked his critics, “senator or congresswoman, are you calling me a liar?” That would have set them back on their heels.

General Petraeus is a member of the United States military. He has devoted his life to his country and he has been willing to give his life for his country, too. He deserves more respect than what he got from these mental midgets in Congress.

The toxic atmosphere in Washington has gotten so bad that some people would prefer America to lose in Iraq if it enhances their political power. This is shameless. Instead of constantly criticizing everything the Bush administration does, liberals should be coming up with a strategy to win this conflict, which is more than about Iraq, though it is, in part, about Iraq. If we don’t achieve our objectives there, we will be faced with even greater challenges in many other countries including our own.

I think the way General Petraeus was treated will come back to haunt liberal democrats. And Halloween is just around the corner. I’m cal thomas in washington.
