I think the primary difference is about repentance...Jeremiah Wright apparently said this recently, and since Barack Obama's run for presidency is influenced by this man's teachings it weighs very heavily upon the moment. It is a pressing issue.
If our brother sins against us and repents we are to forgive him every time. So if the Senator, or the late Jerry Falwell were repentant for their sins and turned from them we are to forgive and not hold it against them.
I do believe that Christians did speak out against Jerry Falwells comments and certainly against racism of any kind, which is why we must still speak out and separate ourselves form Jeremiah Wright, until such time as he repents and comes back to the fold so to speak. If he harbors racism and flawed doctrine then he should be corrected by scripture... by his Christian peers, etc. If he refuses to repent and teaches false doctrine then the light needs to remain focused for his own sake.
