Obama: Changing Positions to Centerfield?

Cal Thomas

Syndicated Columnist

January 13, 2009

Politicians, whether left or right, Republican or Democrat, are after all, politicians. That’s why it is amusing to see so many on the left who are appalled at how President-elect Obama is moving to the center on tax cuts and the Guantanamo prison.

After pledging to close the base for terrorist suspects in Cuba in his first 100 days in office, Obama now says he may have to wait longer because these are dangerous people and we don’t want to turn them loose in America.  This is precisely what President Bush has said.

Obama’s chief economic adviser now says tax cuts help put money back into people’s pockets and stimulate the economy. This has been the conservative position.

This is going to be fun to watch. The left thought that Obama was one of them. How long will it take them to start denouncing him? One hundred days? Three months? One year?

When the decision-making power falls on you, you suddenly realize that the world isn’t a perfect place and must be dealt with accordingly. Keep an eye on the left-wing. Things could get interesting.
