I love definitions. Here is the definition of optimism: “A disposition or tendency to look on the more favorable side of events or conditions and to expect the most favorable outcome.”

Isn’t optimism what is missing from this recession? Where are the political leaders who are optimistic? Where are those who say, “You can do it.” Why aren’t we seeing people who have come through difficult circumstances in the past? They survived and so can we.

I have a theory about this. Politicians don’t want you to be optimistic. They want you to rely on them. According to especially liberal politicians, you shouldn’t rely on yourself and capitalism to bail you out. Oh, no. You should rely on government. And the reason you should rely on government is that such an attitude expands the power of politicians.

How many are telling us to expect the most favorable outcome? Not many. Republicans don’t want to say it because they will be called “insensitive.” And as I say Democrats don’t want you to be optimistic because that will decrease their power. I choose to be optimistic!
