An Answer to Tea Party Critics

Cal Thomas

Syndicated Columnist

April 20, 2009

Those “tea parties” held across America last week got the left’s attention. The left belittled them and characterized them as anti-tax protests by people, most of whom would not see their taxes go up.

It’s a lie. In addition to many states and localities that are raising taxes and fees on all sorts of things, federal taxes will go up next year; and not just on the so-called “rich.” The rich should sue for discrimination. Everyone should pay taxes. That way, all would feel the liberty that is being stolen from us.

Last week’s demonstrations were about government that has gone out of control. They were about record amounts of spending and debt. Taxes will have to go up to bail us out of the mountain of debt the Obama administration is piling up, just as the Bush administration started before it.

Illinois Democratic Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky blasted the “tea parties” as “despicable and shameful.” I’ll tell you what’s despicable and shameful. It’s Congress and what they have done with our money.
