Conservatism Begins at Home

Cal Thomas

Syndicated Columnist

May 14, 2009

There has been a lot of commentary in recent days about what the Republican Party needs to do to regain power.

First, the GOP should stop seeing power as the ultimate goal, but rather a means to an end. What that end is, is what Republicans should focus on.

Start with what works. The problem is that in our entitlement, anything-goes culture, people are being programmed to accept the notion that government should be their keeper and the ultimate determiner of everything from what we drive to how we live. That is a notion foreign to our founders, but if people don’t study the founders, how will they know?

Republicans should lead a crusade to get Christian and conservative kids out of the re-education camps known as government schools. Depriving the secularists and historical revisionists of raw material to create more secular-thinking adults is the greatest blow we can strike against big government redistributionists. All other attempts at reform pale in comparison.
