The Principle of Self-Interest: Democrats and Torture

Cal Thomas

Syndicated Columnist

May 15, 2009

Democrats in Washington are slowly twisting in the wind, trying to prove to a skeptical public and even a skeptical media that they were against enhanced interrogation techniques before they were for them. Oh wait – maybe it’s the other way around. They were for them before they were against them. Or perhaps they were against them all along. They just didn’t really understand that at one time in the aftermath of 9/11 they were for them because that seemed in the best interest of the country.

Never mistake where a politician’s best interests lie. It’s always about the next election.

It is amusing, but not amazing, to see the likes of Speaker Nancy Pelosi say she never signed off on the interrogation methods she now criticizes. Pelosi and some of her Democratic colleagues were briefed on these methods. Pelosi now says she had no idea that the CIA would use them. And new evidence suggests the techniques worked. They may have saved Los Angeles and other cities from an attack. Dick Cheney wants CIA memos released that prove that point. They should be.
