The Party of Nothing

Cal Thomas

Syndicated Columnist

October 30, 2009

What good is a political party if it stands for nothing? The debate over the special election in New York's 23rd district next Tuesday is a perfect example. There are three choices: one, a liberal Democrat who stands for what liberal Democrats usually stand for; choice two, a liberal Republican who stands for pretty much what the liberal democrat stands for. Three, a genuine conservative, Doug Hoffman, who believes in lower taxes, smaller government, individual freedom and is unapologetically pro-life.

For a true conservative the choice would seem obvious, but some party leaders are backing the Republican. To do so means the party stands for nothing. Would a liberal Democrat back a conservative who was for what Hoffman is for? Of course not. The big tent is only for Republicans. Look at the Democrat leadership in Washington, from the president, down. No compromisers there. They are all liberal socialists who want to take our money, our health care and our freedoms. Why would anyone elect someone to the house who is another liberal? Makes no sense to me.
