Your Money: At-Risk with HUD

Cal Thomas

Syndicated Columnist

November 6, 2009

Did you know that the government - Congress and the Obama administration - is giving  millions of dollars - our tax money - to communities and housing agencies that federal watchdogs have concluded are unable to spend it appropriately, thus increasing the likelihood the money will be wasted?

USA Today reported Wednesday that since July, auditors for the Department of Housing and Urban Development's inspector general have scrutinized at least 22 cities, counties and housing authorities in 15 states and Puerto Rico. They have been measuring whether these entities can handle stimulus funds effectively. Only six - six! - have been found to be capable of handling the money.

Congresswoman Maxine Waters, a liberal Democrat of California, chairs the Housing Subcommittee. All she could say is that she expects HUD to take immediate steps to improve oversight. How about immediate steps to get the money back from these poor risk outfits? They won't do that because the Democrats in Cngress are as corrupt as the entities to which they are giving our money. When will it end? Maybe one year from now?
