Democrats Vow to Block Traditional Marriage Amendment

Senate Minority Leader Tom Daschle has vowed that the Federal Marriage Amendment initiative will not survive Democratic senators' bloc of votes in the U.S. Senate. By taking this stand, Democrats in the Senate have told the nation that they are opposed to upholding traditional marriage "only between one man and one woman."

What's amazing about their position is that it clearly flies in the face of national opinion that demonstrates a strong majority (60+ percent) in favor of defending traditional marriage.

Mark Foreman, executive director for the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force (NGLTF), has said his group is "gratified that our allies in the Democratic minority have committed to killing any attempt to enshrine anti-gay discrimination into our nation's most sacred document." Foreman was referring to an effort by President Bush's allies to promote introduction of a constitutional amendment to define marriage as between one man and one woman.

Pro-family advocates would like not only like to see introduction of such a bill in both houses of Congress, but would like a straight up yes or no vote on the issue. Senate Democrats have made it clear that such a vote will not happen.  [Note: The U.S. Senate has different governing rules that allows a minority party (with 41 or more votes) to dictate introduction of legislation to the Senate floor.]

A huge amount of registered Democrats probably do not realize their party's staunch opposition to upholding traditional marriage between one man and one woman. If word of this gets out, it could make a difference in such swing states such as Pennsylvania, Ohio, West Virginia, New Mexico, and Florida.

Paul McGuire, a Los Angeles radio talk-show host, states that "unless people who believe in traditional marriage aggressively pressure these senators to change their position, groups like the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force will be successful in blocking the Federal Marriage Amendment."

Since the Democratic leadership appears fully beholden to gay activists, the one way that party will hear the public's voice will be in the elections this fall. McGuire thinks this issue -- i.e., retaining traditional marriage as the union of one man and one woman -- is the paramount issue of our time.

If people who believe in traditional marriage do not work to change the political arena concerning this issue, McGuire fears "the institution of marriage [as we now know it] will become like some Scandinavian countries. There, traditional marriage has become meaningless with now close to 80 percent of the children born out of wedlock."

With this fall's elections quickly approaching, people will have to understand that Democrats in the U.S. Senate are now firmly set to block and obstruct the passage of the Federal Marriage Amendment. Even in the face of strong (60+ percent) public support for marriage between one man and one woman, the position to oppose traditional marriage is the reality of today's Democratic leadership.

This fall, people need to vote in strong numbers to remove proponents of homosexual marriage. Many of us need to understand the importance of making our votes count this fall -- for ourselves and our children. The future of America's social fabric may rest on it.
