Pinched-Faced Grinches

David Aikman

Beyond the News

December 19, 2005

It’s that strange time of year again, the period before Christmas when pinched-faced ideological grinches emerge from under a rock and try to abolish Christmas.  They don’t want the tree to be called “a Christmas tree,” they don't want stores even to mention the offensive name, they don’t want parties in December to be tainted with the c-word.

It’s time to stand up to this cheerless brand of political correctness and reject the lunacy.  But we should avoid lawsuits and mean-spirited embargoes.  Rather, the 95 percent of us who celebrate Christmas should go out of our way to say “Merry Christmas” at every opportunity, and share the conviction that the birth of Jesus Christ is, yes, good news.

Whatever you do, don’t let the Christmas killjoys quench the joyful spirit of season. It is, after all—and ought to remain—the most wonderful time of the year. Merry Christmas.
