I support the death penalty because it is a just and deserved sanction for some crimes, Secondarily, I support it because it saves innocent lives, even without deterrence.
Pope John Paul II said because prisons protect us from murderers we shouldn't execute. Astounding. No mention of atonement, expiation, justice. Prison is an adequate defender of life, therefore do away with the death penalty and, thereby, nearly 2,000 years of biblical and theological teachings by some of the greatest religious minds of all time, down the drain, because prisons are now secure enough.
Mind numbing.
