Sex and the Seminary?

Sex and the Seminary?

Albert Mohler

Author, Speaker, President of the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary

The release of a report entitled "Sex and the Seminary" is certain to attract attention -- which is no doubt why the report was produced in the first place.  In this case, the report is an attempt to push the sexual revolution through institutions designed for the training of ministers.  As "Sex and the Seminary" makes clear, many liberal institutions joined the sexual revolution long ago.

The report was released January 8, 2009 by the "Sexuality Education for the Formation of Religious Professionals and Clergy" project, which is jointly sponsored by Union Theological Seminary in New York City and the Religious Institute on Sexual Morality, Justice, and Healing in Connecticut.  As might be expected, the report calls for an overhaul of how issues of sexuality are treated within the seminary curriculum.

"At the time when many denominations and faith communities are embroiled in sexuality issues, there is an urgent need for leaders who understand the connections between religion and sexuality," the report announces.

Then:

Seminaries are not providing future religious leaders with sufficient opportunities for study, self-assessment, and ministry formation in sexuality.  They are also not providing seminarians with the skills they need to minister to their congregants and communities, or to become effective advocates where sexuality issues are concerned.

As a reading of the report reveals, the entire project is really about turning seminaries into agencies for a liberal and revisionist sexual agenda.  As the analysis in the report demonstrates, some of these schools embraced those agendas long ago -- and in a big way.

The study was conducted by Kate M. Ott, study director for the project, with assistance from many others.  Among those most frequently acknowledged is Rev. Debra W. Haffner, director of the Religious Institute on Sexual Morality, Justice, and Healing.  Debra Haffner's name will be recognized immediately by anyone involved in issues of sexual controversy in recent decades.  She is an ordained Unitarian Universalist minister, but previously she served as chief executive officer of SIECUS, the Sexuality Information and Education Council of the United States, and, among other positions, as an official with Planned Parenthood of Metropolitan Washington.  She has been pushing a radical sexual agenda for a long time.

There many places in the bible that says homosexuality is wrong. The bible does condemn homosexuality as an unclean and immoral act.By reading a article published on this site I forgot when and from whom this passage was taken. "the bible is full of allegory and examples of how a marriage, with a feminine and masculine spirit has metaphorical symbolism about each of us and our relationship with God." My question is if being homosexual is a good and right thing then why do some people lie and hide who they really are? I think because it is shameful and that is why the bible says it is immoral like many other sins

One of my sons is left handed. But now, he eats and does a number of things with his right hand. I personally know several people who were former homosexuals but now are either married to a woman, looking for wife or celibate.

Understandably, it is sometimes hard to obey what the Bible teaches for we live in a fallen world. I still struggle with sin and countless times I have to ask forgiveness from God. But to say that certain things must be acceptable because we cannot follow them does not make sense. It is like legalizing a crime because several citizens keep committing it.

God loves gays. The church should do the same. We are all sinners saved by grace. No one can be proud of himself. We all need the Savior for salvation from hell and sinful living. But to say a wrong thing should be right because a number of people cannot do it is not right.

Saying that the Lord said nothing about homosexuality is to miss what is very obvious - "Haven't you read that at the beginning the Creator 'made them male and female. For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh'? The Lord reiterated the Genesis teaching that God created only two sexes and that marriage is a one man-woman relationship.

A simple reading of Rom. 1: 26-27 - "Even their women exchanged natural relations for unnatural ones. In the same way the men also abandoned natural relations with women and were inflamed with lust for one another. Men committed indecent acts with other men, and received in themselves the due penalty for their perversion" plainly tells that homosexuality is a perversion.

In 1 Cor. 6: 9-10, Paul was not hesitant to align homosexuality with drunkards and idolaters. Thieves have a strong urge to steal. Men want to have many wives. It is a choice to go our way or God's way.
