Abortion Survivor Shares Story of Forgiveness and Healing in New Book

Veronica Neffinger

An abortion survivor and pro-life activist has shared her story in her new book titled You Carried Me.

The Blaze reports that Melissa Ohden knew she was adopted growing up, but when she was 14 she found out that she had survived a failed saline abortion as a baby.

This rocked her world. To cope with this life-shaking news, she turned to alcohol and sex and developed an eating disorder.

“It was really hard for me to share, but I went through a really, really painful time in my life,” Ohden said. “I tried to get as far away from the truth as I could.”

Eventually, she learned that forgiveness brought healing. This set her on a journey to find her birth mother.

“Forgiveness is a huge part of my journey,” she said. “Accepting that I am who I am and I don’t need to be ashamed of that truly set me free. And I think that’s something a lot of people can relate to — you try to run away from something difficult or painful, but you just can’t. And my faith is what saved me from that. God put me on this journey and I’m thankful.”

After much searching, Ohden finally found her birth mother and discovered that her grandmother had wanted her aborted and hadn’t even told her mother that she had survived the abortion. A nurse saved her life when her grandmother wanted her to be left to die.

Ohden is now a fierce pro-life advocate for babies who share her story.

“There are children like me that survive abortions on a regular basis,” she said. “I could have died in that hospital and nobody ever would have known what was done to me, or that nobody worked to save me. They need to be legally obligated to help.”
