I work in an after-school day care, with children ages 3 to fifth grade. We are always looking to reinforce good manners, especially with the younger children.

One day Matthew, a kindergardner, walked by another worker and me, and on the way, burped rather loudly. Shocked, we asked him what he should say when he did things like that.

He didn't answer initially, but after waiting patiently for a few seconds, he mumbled an "excuse me." My co-worker said to him, smiling, "Yeah- see, I knew that your mother had taught you that."

Matthew looked up, with assertivness blazing in his eyes, and said confidently, "No she didn't. I taught myself."
