Guard Your Hearts

Read Galatians 4:17

Those people are zealous to win you over, but for no good. What they want is to alienate you from us, so that you may have zeal for them.

Have you ever had your heart stolen by the wrong person? How did that situation turn out for you in the end?

Have you ever had someone pursue your friendship but you soon found out they had selfish, ulterior motives? Maybe they acted like they really wanted to get to know you and be your friend, but you found out that they just wanted to sell you something. Or maybe you’ve experienced someone that wants to steal your allegiance so they passionately and persuasively try to get you to join their cause and leave your past allegiances behind.

Perhaps it was a relationship with someone that was so possessive, the individual tried to alienate you from your friends and family for their own gain. None of these are healthy relationships.

The Judaizers were these kinds of “friends”. Paul had built a positive relationship with the Christians of Galatia. He had preached the Gospel of Jesus Christ to them and they joyfully accepted it. But then, the Judaizers came on the scene and began to pursue them. They tried to win them over and steal their hearts. They were zealous or “passionate and enthusiastic” about getting the Christians in Galatia to convert to Judaism and follow Jewish law.

By trying to push them into Judaism, they were trying to pull them away from Paul’s true teaching of the doctrine of grace by faith. Paul says, “they want to alienate you from us”. They didn’t want the Galatian Christians to hear the apostles’ teaching because it contradicted their own.

Paul warned them that “those people were zealous to win you over, but for no good”. No good could come from hearing a message that contradicts the message of God’s mercy, forgiveness, and grace through your faith alone.

Friends, be discerning. There are many false teachers out there trying to win you over and alienate you from the truth so that you can promote them and their message. Don’t buy into it.

Father, please grant me wisdom and discernment to be able to notice the false teachers among me who want me to embrace a false gospel. Amen.
