A Week of Prayers for Our Nation

A Week of Prayers for Our Nation

May 4, 2023, was the National Day of Prayer. Sadly, it didn’t even cross my mind since it coincided with my brother-in-law’s birthday and the “May the Fourth Be With You” holiday. Is it even called a holiday? Anyway, this fun “pun” day holds meaning in our house since we celebrate the birthday guy that is also a huge Star Wars fan. While I am not a big Star Wars fan and know little about the movies, I still enjoy laughing and pretending to know all the inside jokes.

But I digress. Here’s the thing, as the first Thursday of the month rolled around, deeming the National Day of Prayer, I was more aware of the “force being with me” than I was offering up prayers for our nation. The more I thought about it, the more I realized how rarely I actually pray for our country. Not only that but with so much going on, I often feel unsure where to even start.

Truthfully, I am quick to pray over my family, friends, church, and community, but I fail to recognize the power of my prayers for our nation. While I may toss up the occasional prayer during political events, elections, or after a catastrophic event, sadly, it is not a natural part of my prayer life. And, as of late, I feel convicted that it needs to be.

Turn on the news, and it is apparent that more and more tragic and devastating events are unfolding right before our eyes. They seem to be coming on faster and more furious these days. It’s not hard to see that our country is desperately hurting. It is groaning for hope and healing. It’s longing for unity and peace. And while we have recently seen some beautiful displays of college students gathering to worship across the country to lift their hands in prayers and praise to God, we need to be encouraged to continue!

So, will you pray with me? Let’s start by putting our hands together and lifting up our hearts with joy and a song of praise while relinquishing our pain and sorrow for our lost nation. Below you will find a Scripture and daily prayer to cover our precious nation. Let’s make this a part of our everyday prayer life and see to it that we make every day a national day of prayer!

Sunday: A Prayer for God’s Hand of Protection and Sovereignty

“No weapon forged against you will prevail, and you will refute every tongue that accuses you. This is the heritage of the servants of the LORD, and this is their vindication from me,” declares the LORD. Isaiah 54:17

Lord, You are a good and gracious Father, and we thank You for Your love and fearless protection over our nation. We ask that You place Your mighty hand over this country and protect Your people. We know there is a deep need to share Your love with those that are lost or have fallen away. Place those on our hearts that we need to reach, and give us the courage to share Your love, so we can all dwell in the safety of Your care. Amen.

Monday: A Prayer for the Integrity of Our Political Leaders

For lack of guidance, a nation falls, but victory is won through many advisers. Proverbs 11:14

Faithful Father, we lift up our leaders to You. Please lead and guide them to do what is good, noble, and right. Sway them from selfish motives and protect their hearts and minds as they make decisions for our nation. Give them the desire and passion for seeking You and walking with purpose and integrity. As a free nation that is given the opportunity to take part in the election process, grant us the wisdom to choose leaders and officials that will honor You, Lord. Amen.

Tuesday: A Prayer for Unity and Peace

Finally, brothers and sisters, rejoice! Strive for full restoration, encourage one another, be of one mind, live in peace. And the God of love and peace will be with you. 2 Corinthians 13:11

O God, it is apparent that our country is craving unity and peace. Please bring forth Your blessing and promise of peace to the communities most impacted by hurt and division, and show us where we can encourage and serve others in Your name. Give Your church and the people a soft heart to meet the needs of others with zeal and passion while making it a safe and welcoming place for all to worship and glorify You! Amen.

Wednesday: A Prayer for Justice and Christians to Rise

Dear children, let us not love with words or speech but with actions and in truth. 1 John 3:18

Gracious God, we know we are in a spiritual battle, so enable us to be a light in this dim world. Help us speak out with a heart of justice, Your justice, but to do so with grace and humility. Give us the courage to stand firm in our convictions while leaning into You for guidance. Help us walk with integrity, speak with purpose, and seek Your wisdom when rising up against the evil of this world. Amen.

Thursday: A Prayer for God’s Grace and Mercy

But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions—it is by grace you have been saved. Ephesians 2:4-5

Jesus, please have mercy on us. Forgive us where we have failed You and reignite our hearts with a passion for serving You and glorifying Your name. Place a desire within our hearts to live boldly and help us use our talents and gifts to spread the good news. We know our nation is far from perfect, so we ask that You have grace and mercy on our shortcomings and help us rise again to the nation that we so deeply love and cherish. Amen.

Friday: A Prayer for Restoration and Healing

Nevertheless, I will bring health and healing to it; I will heal my people and will let them enjoy abundant peace and security. Jeremiah 33:6

Heavenly Father, thank you for Your Truth. Please pour it out on this nation and Your children, as we have drifted so far from it. The liar has gotten loud, and mass confusion and deception grow. Weave Your love and the basis of our identity into the fabric of this country. Restore what has been lost and grant healing to those that have become consumed and swallowed up in sinful ways. Amen.

Saturday: A Prayer for Revival

Will you not revive us again, that your people may rejoice in you? Palm 85:6

Almighty God, our nation needs hope. Many have lost sight of the honor and bravery so many have given in order to make this precious land free. This country has witnessed hurt and pain before; we have undergone broken and brutal times, and there has been unrest and division, but we have persevered. Revive our hearts again. Give us the passion to fight for this country with the urge to sing Your praises. Let a widespread revival sweep across Your land and open hearts again to the hope You offer. We ask all these things in Your Holy Name. Amen.
