Blind in the Darkness

Psalm 139

“Dave, the deep dive qualification was an experience. Had to adjust the pressure in my ears every eight feet or so, and when we got down to sixty feet, even with my light, I could barely see my partner less than two feet away. It’s spooky down there, and I found out that those zebra mussels aren’t just dangerous to other wild life in the lakes. Coming up I brushed my hand across a ledge in the darkness.”

My friend showed me the reddened scratches on the inside of his hand. He’s a fireman qualifying with others in his department so that they can help do water rescue not only in their hometown but across the DFW Metroplex when needed.

“It was the dark, the lack of visibility that got me. It’s one thing to do this deep dive with a competent friend. Imagine plunging into that cold murky darkness alone!”

When life turns into this kind of darkness and visibility goes to zero, Psalm 139 reminds me that I’m not alone. Even when life seems like I’m alone on a deep ocean dive, I can’t escape God’s presence and protection.

“Where can I go from Your Spirit and where from Your face can I flee. If I fly to the heavens, You are there. If I make my bed in the depths, there You are…

Even the darkness will not be dark for You and the night—it’s broad daylight for You, for darkness for You is light. ” - Psalm 139:8, 12

LORD, help Mary and me to believe that the Psalmist is right. Your guiding loving presence will not abandon us when we can’t see ahead.
