Don’t Be Afraid Or Deceived

Luke 21:7-11

Claim that you have insider information on the date of the Messiah’s return, develop a state of the art You Tube video, say that you wanted to give the secrets out free, but then it would not be appreciated, so you charge a fee, and you’ve got yourself a gold mine. Better yet, grow your hair long, let your beard lengthen, put on a bathrobe, and then go on TV proclaiming you’re the Messiah, the one who corrects the errors made in previous revelations, and you can give birth to your own religion. It could generate millions. Only one problem—Jesus, the true Messiah, says you’re lying.

“Now they asked Jesus, ‘Teacher, when will these things be and what will be the sign when these things are about to happen?’ He responded, ‘Look out! Don’t be deceived! For many will come in my name saying, ‘I am, and the time is near.’ Don’t go after them. Now whenever you hear of wars and chaos, don’t be terrified. For these things must first take place, but the end is not yet.’

Then Jesus went on responding to them, ‘Nation will rise up against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be great earthquakes and famines and plagues in various places—fearful events and great signs in the heavens.’” Luke 21:7-11

If we track the Story with Luke, we remember that Jesus has already made it clear that before His second coming to earth to set up His Kingdom, the signs will be unmistakable. It will be like a lightning bolt; even those lost in their electronic gadgets won’t miss it (Lk. 17:20-37). The power and the glory are going to be huge (Lk. 21:27). Here Jesus describes the interim period we as believers are living in now, and telling us that in the midst of all the trouble we don’t need to be afraid, and we need to warn others against following false messiahs.

LORD, bombarded with worldwide media, we experience every explosion, every shake, every gun shot, and every dry spell. Help me to hear your comfort but also your strong command, ‘Be alert, but don’t be afraid!’ Help me not to make bad decisions today out of fear and dread.
