The Cougar Tale

Proverbs 2:16-19

Teens tend to learn more about sex in the locker room or in peer chat rooms than they do in their homes or churches. In the sixties Ann Bancroft played the role of Mrs. Robinson, an unhappy wife seeking to dull the pain by seducing a young college graduate, and Dustin Hoffman’s career took off. The Graduate continues to be lauded as a classic, and few Bible-loving believers would guess that Solomon had his own version of this “Cougar” Tale. In his version, the older woman’s prey is not a college graduate but a young teen. He warns his son against this Black Widow in his second father-son talk (Proverbs 2:1-22).

“To deliver you from the forbidden woman, from the exotic woman with her smooth words, from the woman who abandons the companion of her youth and forgets the covenant of her God. Her house collapses into death. Her paths lead to the spirits of the dead. All those who come to her never return. They never attain the paths of life.” - Proverbs 2:16-19

Our culture today is a lot like the sexually charged Canaanite culture that the godly father in Proverbs faced. I pray that parents will get serious with their kids about the subjects the Heavenly Father talks to tweens about in His Word and not shy away from those parts that expose the truth about the “Mrs. Robinsons” of the world

LORD, protect my five grandsons as they grow up in this present “Canaanite” culture. Help them learn from the time they are little boys that the Bible is not a moralistic book with only nice stories about good boys and girls. Help them hear what You have to say about both the bad men and bad women who will try to seduce them and bring them down.
