Critically Ashamed

The title of FM Static’s sophomore project almost begs for a negative review. But in keeping with the spirit of never judging a CD by its title, there is a whole lot of pop power and rock ‘n’ roll fun on what could be a guilty pleasure even to the most hip indie appreciator. While the mounds of hooks, gleeful choruses and infectious rhythms aren’t the most artistically intricate, they are catchy from start to finish.

“Flop Culture” is a surf-inspired ditty poking fun at MTV, Michael Jackson and former Guns ‘n’ Roses guitarist Axl Rose through remarkable rhymes and a hysterical storyline. The more melodic “America’s Next Freak” gives a tongue-in-cheek lesson on the latest musical fads and their subsequent subcultures.

On a more serious note, “Moment of Truth” was the wedding proposal song for frontman Trevor McNevan (also the lead singer of Thousand Foot Krutch). Despite its occasional syrupy lines, it is sure to tug a few young couples’ heartstrings.

FM Static may have origins as a side project for McNevan, but Critically Ashamed cements the band’s long-term intentions.
