Finally Awake

Much of Seventh Day Slumber’s connection to its fervent fan base comes from the testimony of frontman Joseph Rojas, a former felon and drug addict. The group’s latest project once again chronicles Rojas’ rebirthing process, while simultaneously providing encouragement for those caught in the depths of despair. Take the bone-crunching guitars of “Awake,” which indicate a band ready to share the good news and lead the lost to healing.

Other firm fists, such as the blistering “My Only Hope” and the snarling “Burning Bridges,” provide similar spiritual appeal, though they also showcase a sonic growth and maturity beyond the group’s last CD, Once Upon a Shattered Life.

Yet alternative ballad “Missing Pages” is the most effective ministry mechanism, recalling the likes of secular giants 3 Doors Down, Nickelback and Staind. The track’s proactive approach—meant to free a soul grappling with addictions—demonstrates yet another lyrically sensitive but sonically scalding stride in the right direction for these culturally aware Christian rockers.
