Five Score and Seven Years Ago

Relient K has successfully expanded upon its patented formula with its latest disc, adding stimulating levels of depth via piano, acoustic guitar and even hints of pop and emotional, varied vocals.

Five Score and Seven Years Ago is not just a commercial pop-punk record, though staple followers will still find their fill of speedy riffery and youthful zeal. Not that previous efforts were in any way lacking, but the third dimension here is both fashionable and exciting, giving the listener a breather every now and then between the sprints.

Consider the album’s first single, “Must Have Done Something Right.” Vocalist Matt Theissen’s voice flutters with previously unheard sensitivity, over acoustic guitar, reminiscent of something closer to Death Cab For Cutie than blink-182. And fans can always count on this band to deliver frank, uplifting words to get them through tumultuous times.

Five Score and Seven Years Ago should keep Relient K where the band belongs: on top and connecting with millions of mall-populating youngsters.
