Nothing Is Sound

Considering the overwhelming reception of Switchfoot’s last album, The Beautiful Letdown, across all walks of life, these San Diego rockers comprise one of the most influential and inventive groups of our time. Sure they found traction in spiritual spectrums and continue to walk with faith-based footing. But it is remarkable what the members have accomplished in the mainstream. And thanks to the strength and substance of the band’s new release, Nothing Is Sound, it is likely that impact will grow as the group continues to perfect its surf-infused, alternative sound.
From rock anthem “Lonely Nation” through the acoustic delicacy of the album’s finale, “Daisy,” the Jon Foreman-led operation stings with infectious, elevated artistry. Both “Stars” and the bristling pop of “The Setting Sun” are the stand-out tunes.
In terms of dynamics, this disc shifts in several directions, from meaty guitars to low-key grunge to melodic balladry. All the while these guys stand firm in their Christian beliefs, never watering down their faith, but delivering lyrics with crafty, intelligent evangelism as the goal. Nothing Is Sound is an all around achievement sure to cement Switchfoot as not only tastemakers of today, but also forerunners of tomorrow.
