Youth Group Fund-raiser
Published Oct 08, 2001

Hello, my name is Andrew Sanders and I am a high school student at Berean Christian High School. Being pretty involved in school and in the church youth group, I've done my share of typical fund-raisers like bake sales, car washes, candy bars and so on.
Well, two years ago, our youth group did a fund-raiser that was quite a bit of fun and made a bit of money, too. Our fundraiser was called Strive. It is along the same line as a walkathon or whatever "athon" you can think of, but this is a workathon. The leaders of the youth group plan a day pretty far in advance and then schedule community service projects that the students can work on. We did things like pick up trash, yardwork, renovate a park and other things that the city wanted us to do.
The idea is to get as many students as possible involved. Every student is to ask people to sponsor them for a fund-raiser they are doing at their church. I always told people what kind of community service projects we were going to do. The way it worked at our church as that half of the money that each student raised went into the church youth budget, while the other half went into an account for that student to use for camps or other church activities. Not only was the fund-raiser successful but also a good outreach to the community.
And, last but not least, it was a blast!
