Bless the Lord at All Times – Beloved Women – October 9, 2020

READ: “I will bless the Lord at all times; his praise shall continually be in my mouth.” (Psalm 34:1 ESV)

TODAY’S ENCOURAGEMENT: I don’t know about you, but “blessing the Lord” can come relatively easy some days. However, the struggle comes in doing it “at all times” and “continually,” particularly during trials.  Back to back deaths of loved ones. Economic struggles. Difficult or estranged relationships. Societal pressures and injustices. Health challenges. Pandemics. I’ve often wondered, “How is “at all times” and “continually” even possible?”

When reading this Psalm, two words grabbed my attention as a response to that question. Boast and magnify.

Now, understand that David was not advocating for ignoring challenges, or pretending that circumstances aren’t difficult. That is denial. In fact, he penned this while running from Saul, in response to God delivering him from yet another enemy.

David knew situations could be crushing, but he also learned that God is more powerful than any situation. It’s all about perspective. As a result, he writes that his soul found its satisfaction and pride in the Lord -not his past victories or position in Saul’s inner circle.

There are many things we are tempted to take pride in, but like David, we quickly discover that nothing is permanent or perfect except God. Continual praise is only possible if the object being praised is consistently praiseworthy.

Our response to His consistent character – His love, grace, mercy, power, presence, holiness, patience, rebuke, discipline – His very existence - is to align our view of God to this reality.

That is what makes blessing Him at all times possible.

PRAY: Lord, in trials and trying seasons, help me to adjust my perspective. Remind me of Your consistency, Your nature, and Your presence when life overwhelms me. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

REFLECT: Has there been a time when you have been able to praise God in spite of your circumstances? Did you experience a peace that surpassed your understanding? What made that possible?
