Daily Disciples Devotional - December 20

December 20

Today's Reading:  Psalms 35-36; Acts 25
Today's Thoughts: Too Many Voices

To Adam he said, Because you listened to your wife and ate from the tree about which I commanded you, 'You must not eat of it,' "Cursed is the ground because of you" Genesis 3:17

Who are you listening to? There are so many voices that speak to us, and then, even our own minds seem to have a voice of its own. But which voice do you follow and give in to? Adam was cast out of the garden for listening to his wife. The wife was cursed for listening to the serpent. Adam knew the rules of the garden because he had listened to the Lord first. But for Adam and Eve, listening was the sin that led to destruction. They both first listened, and then they both ate.

Many people in our lives have many conflicting messages. I spent part of last Easter with my extended family. We discussed several subjects topping the news headlines and I was surprised how much different information was compiled from each person on each event. I was not sure how credible all the "facts" were. We each have a responsibility to know what the Lord is telling us, to listen to Him and to act on those commands. We have to make the Lord's Word our guide and not deviate from His truths regardless of how appealing additional information may sound.

If you have come to know Christ personally, you have His Holy Spirit living in you. He is there to lead you and guide you in the ways you should go. Your calling may be completely different from what your family thinks of you. Your calling may be completely different from what you thought it would be. Be sure to follow His voice. Be confident, knowing that He knows what is best for you. If you listen to other voices, you might suffer consequences that will quench your ability to hear God's voice. Take your thoughts captive, trust in Him and He will give you the desires of your heart.
