Daily Disciples Devotional - November 9

November 9
Today's Reading:  Leviticus 8-9; Matthew 25:31-46

Today's Thoughts:   Honoring the Lord

"For the lips of a priest should keep knowledge, And people should seek the law from his mouth; For he is the messenger of the Lord of hosts. Malachi 2:7

Chapter two of Malachi addresses two important components in our lives as Christians. For the priests, God was addressing how their lips should speak forth the law of the Lord and should keep the knowledge of God in the words they spoke. How do our words express our motives? Do our mouths speak forth wisdom and knowledge of the Lord; or do we use our mouths for selfish ambitions? Malachi speaks to the importance of how our mouths should be used for the Lord’s service, not of our own, lest we stumble another person.

The second part of chapter two addresses marriage. The Lord takes the covenant of marriage very seriously, as Malachi addresses those who have “dealt treacherously” with the wife of their youth. The divorce rate among believers today is almost identical to non-believers. Why are we not taking this vow as seriously as the Lord does? How can we honor the Lord in our marriages? It starts with an understanding of God’s perspective, which has not changed over the course of time.

Take some time this week and read the book of Malachi. It is the last book in the Old Testament, and in it we are told of the coming of John the Baptist. As you read it, meditate on the message from the Lord, not only to His people at this time in history but also the message God has for you today.
