God, Our Help
When my problems seem beyond repair,
Stubborn troubles all that l can see,
Jesus gives great cause for hopeful prayer:
He who made the heavens cares for me.
King David penned this statement of trust in Psalms 121:1-2 “I will lift up my eyes to the hills—from whence comes my help? My help comes from the Lord, who made heaven and earth.” Perhaps today you just need help. Circumstances have conspired to strain your relationships, beat you down, and remove what little joy you had. Maybe it’s the pain in your body, stress over the children, or dwindling finances. It’s hard to concentrate, as everything looks horribly black, with little hope of change. If this is the case, take your lead from David. He certainly knew troubles—in his family, in his army, and in his kingdom. What gave David hope was that the God who made the heavens and the Earth was also his refuge and strength.
Think again of the heavens: immense, dazzling stars; colossal galaxies; powerful supernovae. These all exist at His pleasure. He spoke them into existence and will extinguish them just as easily. He is almighty. He brings light into darkness and makes springs of water flow in the desert (Psalms 107:35). There is nothing too difficult for Him.
Troubles take many forms, and God works divine purposes through them that we don’t always immediately understand. But He couldn’t be our Deliverer unless there were things to deliver us from, and He receives great glory when we trust Him in the face of difficulties. The book of Job reveals clearly that this is so. Honor Him by trusting in His love today. He is the Good Shepherd. He knows how to help and protect His sheep. He knows how to help and protect you.
I would have despaired unless I had believed that I would see the goodness of the LORD in the land of the living.
--Psalm 27:13 NASB
