Girl Uninterrupted - Encouragement Café - March 5

Girl Uninterrupted
By Linda Gray

You keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on You, because he trusts in You. Isaiah 26:3 ESV

Ah yes, my favorite time of day—my quiet time. Bible? Check. Highlighter? Check. Colored pencils sharpened? Check. Prayer list? Check. Ready to settle in for a bit.

Wait. Was that the dryer that shut off? Does the cat want to go outside? Did I set the chicken out to thaw for dinner? What was it I needed from the grocery store? Who’s calling?  Oh no, I need to go to the powder room.

On and on it goes.  It seems every time I sit down to feast on God’s Word, I am interrupted. If not physically, mentally. But I eventually get settled for the time that refreshes and energizes me.

As women, we are encouraged to multi-task.  We take pride in doing more than one thing at a time.  We see it as being industrious and good stewards of our time. We pride ourselves in all we accomplish and get a charge out of seeing the checkmarks beside the items on our to-do list.

If we take a look at Christ’s example in Luke 5:15-16 we can see the importance He placed on the quiet times He spent with the Father. When word got out that “the Healer” was in town, crowds flocked around Him. He seemed to be surrounded by needy people much of the time. He also had a need and that was time with the Father. Even when faced with His death on the cross, He withdrew Himself from His disciples in the garden to pray (Mark 14:32-36). There are many other instances where He got alone to commune with God. And if He, being God the Son, needed that time we sure do as well.

God calls us away.  He longs to speak truth into our lives.  He longs for the fellowship our quiet time affords Him. To truly benefit from this time with Him, my heart and mind need to be undivided.  And it takes an act of my will.

But it’s so worth it.  The peace I lacked regarding a personal issue meets me when I am on my knees.  My troubles vanish in His presence. As the song says, “The things of earth will grow strangely dim in the light of His glory and grace.”  That only happens when I shut out the rest of the world and focus on Him.

Yes, there will always be things that want to draw my attention away when I purpose to press into God’s presence.  But I will always strive to be “a girl uninterrupted.”

Father, You see that I desire a special time with You each day. Please help me put all aside and focus my attention on You. Amen.
