Guardian of My Soul
By Paris Renae

For you were like sheep going astray, but you have now returned to the Shepherd and Guardian of your souls. 1 Peter 2:25 HCSB

Just a guess, but I bet you’re like me – I much prefer what ‘seems’ safe, a sure thing, painless, in my comfort zone as opposed to what ‘seems’ risky, uncertain, costly, uncomfortable.

Yet it seems we often find ourselves in those trying, stretching, refining times. It is then we learn:

We live by faith, not by sight.  2 Corinthians 5:7 NIV

In a fearful world full of life’s storms, we tend to really like the word ‘certain.’ By definition it means: known for sure, established beyond doubt.

Now faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see.  Hebrews 11:1 NIV

We live more “like sheep going astray.” When a sheep wanders, that’s when it’s in danger – no protection of the flock or from the shepherd. No direction to where food or water is. No rest. No voice to listen to for guidance.

Faith moves us beyond doubt toward our Hope. In faith, we see our Shepherd and the second part of
1 Peter 2:25 prevails “but now you have returned to the Shepherd and Guardian of your souls.”

Our Shepherd leads us… the Defender, Protector, Keeper of our very souls speaks quietly, guiding us through His Living Word… and speaking tenderly in those moments when we hush long enough to hear.

Oh, yes, dear one, you and I will question, we will doubt. But our comfort is knowing where to take that question, that doubt – deep breath, lifted eyes, surrendered heart – certain peace, certain joy, and certain scarred hands carrying us through each day.

When life’s storms come our way (and they will) join me in remembering to:

  • Hush long enough to hear Him
  • Search His Word deeply enough to find strength
  • Lift up prayers without ceasing

He is the Faithful Keeper of our very souls.

Oh Father, how we dread and doubt, fear and worry, in life’s storms. Work in our hearts calming us with Your Strong Words of Strength and with Your Holy Spirit assuring us of our Hope. Remind us to lift up our eyes to where our Help comes from – from You the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth. We know You are watching over our coming and going, now and forever. Teach us anew to rest in the Shepherd’s arms. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
