Today’s Special is: Sometimes We Don’t Have the Answers

Carefully prepared just for you by your friend, Shelly Roberts

Main Ingredient:

Guide me in your truth and teach me, for you are God my Savior, and my hope is in you all day long.

– Psalm 25:5 NIV

Entrée:

“Mommy, will my birth mom go to heaven?” asked my sweet six year old. As adoptive parents, we are constantly facing questions that we need wisdom to handle. It’s not our place to give easy answers to just try to make our children feel better. It IS our place to come alongside and speak truth into our kids’ lives. They need to know that even when there are many unknowns, they have a heavenly Father who CARES. He IS Truth. He IS Alive. He IS the ONLY ONE in whom they can truly trust.

Some of our children come from really hard places. Perhaps there was deep neglect. Maybe you don’t have a lot of “happy” to offer them from their early beginnings, but oh, dear mom, you have SO MUCH to offer them. And it has NOTHING to do with you. In reality, you don’t have all they need. You never will. But there is ONE who does! Isn’t that good news?

As you walk this journey with your precious child, you can take every opportunity to gently direct them to the ONE who gave everything. Even better than you, He knows their deepest needs. He knows every day they have lived. He knows all the losses. He knows all the questions left unanswered. He is the ONE we must direct their little hearts to for hope - true, indescribable HOPE.

Perhaps you’re scared. You freeze up when the questions come and you don’t know what to say. You know what sweet mom? It’s okay to say, “I don’t know. I don’t have all the answers little one.” The Father is here to guide you in His Truth and teach you. Our HOPE needs to be in HIM all day long. He who created the heavens and the earth can be trusted.

Take Out:

When your child comes with a hard question, take a moment and breathe in your Father’s grace. With God’s help you can embrace the questions.

Dessert:

Lord, I am reminded daily that I do not have all the answers. Thank You for being my Guide and my Teacher. Please direct my words as I love on my children. May what I say always gently point them to You.
