Momma Always Said Choose Your Friends Wisely - Encouragement Café - October 30

Momma Always Said Choose Your Friends Wisely
 By Jill Beran

Whoever walks with the wise becomes wise, but the companion of fools will suffer harm.  Proverbs 13:20 ESV

My mom often told us to choose our friends wisely.  The reasons she shared are ones I now give my kids.  Years ago, I was reminded how this piece of advice was still important during that season of my life.

God had opened my eyes to something I had done wrong, and though no external damage was done, He still led me to go to two different people and apologize.  After confessing to person A, she responded, “It’s no big deal.  Don’t worry about it.”

Then I shared with person B and her words struck me.  She said, “I didn’t see the problem, but this is between you and God… so know you’re forgiven.”  My friend shared these words like they were no big deal, but the point she made left an impression on my heart.

I was grateful she listened, responded rightly and shared her wisdom.  The sin in my life may not have been evident to her, but it was to me.  And to God.  She spoke the words and God granted the forgiveness.

This situation led me to think about friendships and what I expect, better yet need, from them.  It’s nice to be accepted for who I am, but I’m grateful for friends who help me become who God created me to be.

It’s easy when others overlook my shortcomings, but I need friends to keep me accountable.  It’s a joy to walk through life with others, but the real blessing comes when together we grow closer to Christ and mature in our faith.  I want friends who are fun to be with, but I need ones who set an example with the life they live!

C.S. Lewis once said,

The next best thing to being wise oneself is to live in a circle of those who are.

Friend, I don’t know about you, but I know I need all the wisdom I can get!  One way God provides this is through friendships with others in Christ.

Regardless of your age, momma’s advice still applies – Choose your friends wisely!

Think about your friends… have you chosen them wisely?  How do they impact you?  Though we’re adults, peer pressure can still influence us… are your friends pointing you towards Christ and helping you mature in your faith?

Take some time today to sit and ponder these questions.  And if you’re the mom now giving this advice to your kids, remember to heed it as well… today your friends don’t just impact you, but they can also leave an impression on your children.

Dear Heavenly Father, Lord, thank You for friends.  I’m grateful for the godly friends You have put in my life.  Thank You for working through them in powerful ways to bless me, give me wisdom and mature me as Your child.

As I make new friends, help me choose them wisely.  Lord, if I’m in friendships that are not wise, make that clear to me and show me how to handle it.  Finally, Father help me be a friend who impacts others, speaks truth and shares Your love.  Thank You for being the perfect, faithful friend.  In Jesus’ Name, Amen
