Fix Your Eyes

Read Isaiah 25:8-9

He will swallow up death forever; and the Lord GOD will wipe away tears from all faces, and the reproach of His people He will take away from all the earth, for the LORD has spoken. It will be said on that day, “Behold, this is our God; we have waited for him, that He might save us. This is the LORD; we have waited for Him; let us be glad and rejoice in His salvation.”

Is death something that is hard for you to think about? What hope do you have in the face of death?

Death isn’t something that we like to sit around and think about. Many people live in denial of the reality of death for as long as they can. But eventually, we are all going to die. The people we love are going to die. This is a reality for all of mankind because of the fall in the garden. Romans 5:12 says, “Therefore, just as sin came into the world through one man, and death through sin, so death spread to all men because all sinned-.” All have sinned, and all will die.

In our present pandemic circumstances, the threat of death is much more obvious. It is more difficult to walk around, pretending that we won’t ever die when something like this occurs. So what do we do? Do we live in fear of death? Or do we choose to live in hope?

I am choosing to live in hope—the hope of Jesus. The prophet Isaiah pronounced God’s promise that through Jesus, He will swallow up death forever. Jesus’s death on the cross has paid the penalty for your sin. His resurrection has triumphed over death. If you are a believer in Jesus Christ, He is offering you salvation. As a believer, you, too, can triumph over death in the resurrection.

Have you accepted that offer? If you have, you can look forward to the day Jesus returns and wipes away every tear. Death will be no more.

In the Lord of the Rings, Sam asks Gandalf, “Is everything sad going to come, untrue?” As believers in Christ, we can say, yes. Yes, it is.

Today, let’s fix our eyes on our Hope. Let us rejoice and be glad in His salvation. He has swallowed up death forever. Hallelujah!

O LORD, we are waiting expectantly for Your return, and we are rejoicing in the promise of Your salvation. Amen.
