A Faith with Confidence and Certainty

By faith Abraham, when called to go to a place he would later receive as his inheritance, obeyed and went, even though he did not know where he was going. Hebrews 11:8

The call of Abraham is recorded in Genesis 12:1-4. The writer to the Hebrews assumes we are familiar with this passage.

The LORD had said to Abram, "Leave your country, your people and your father's household and go to the land I will show you. I will make you into a great nation and I will bless you; I will make your name great, and you will be a blessing. I will bless those who bless you, and whoever curses you I will curse; and all peoples on earth will be blessed through you." So Abram left, as the LORD had told him; and Lot went with him. Abram was seventy-five years old when he set out from Haran.

The call of Abraham was not a call to blind faith. It included action with confidence and certainty (Hebrews 11:1).

  • Abraham moved out on the knowledge of God's promised blessing (Genesis 12:2-3).
  • Abraham moved out with the heartfelt agreement that God could deliver on His promise. He had seventy-five years of history with God.
  • Abraham moved out with the certainty that although he did not know where he was going, God did. God directed him to go "to the land I will show you."

One more thing:

  • Abraham moved out! Faith is not just something we discuss. It involves action. Obedience makes it come alive. Without obedience it is dead. (James 2:26).

Father, give us open ears to hear, open hearts to accept and the courage to obey. In Jesus' name. Amen.
