The Day of the Lord

But do not forget this one thing, dear friends: With the Lord a day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years are like a day. The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. He is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance2 Peter 3:8-9

Scoffers were doing what they do best ... scoffing. Dripping with sarcasm, they asked the believers, "Where is this so-called 'coming' that Jesus promised?" Facing persecution, the believers were wondering the same thing. No doubt many were thinking, Lord, if You are going to come back, this would really be a good time. So Peter gives an explanation and encouragement.

First, Peter explains that while God works within time, His eternal mind does not think in terms of a 24-hour day, a 7-day week, or a 12-month year. The passing of generation after generation after generation on earth is simply a slight blip on the eternal radar. God is not slow; He exists in an eternal time frame.

Second, Peter encourages the believers by reminding them of God's character. What some might see as "slowness" is really His patience. He is providing time for all His children "to come to repentance." He will make sure all are safely home before He finally and forever closes the door. God's patience is a demonstration of His love, mercy, grace, forgiveness, and salvation. He can be trusted ... all the way to heaven.

Father, thank You for waiting on us to come to repentance. Thank You for Your promise to bring all Your children safely home. Thank You for Your patience. Thank You for Your love, mercy, grace, forgiveness, and salvation. In Jesus' name. Amen.
