It’s a Done Deal

August 31

Read Colossians 2:13-14

And you, who were dead in your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh, God made alive together with him, having forgiven us all our trespasses, by canceling the record of debt that stood against us with its legal demands. This he set aside, nailing it to the cross.

Reflect

Is there anything more we need to do in order to repay God to atone for our sins?

When people hear the Gospel, they sometimes have a hard time accepting that it’s true. They might say something like, “But you don’t know what I’ve done! How could God ever forgive me for something like that?”

But in today’s verse, Paul clearly stated that all our sins have been forgiven. He said the debt that we owe has been canceled. Picture a document with all of your sins listed out—past, present, and future. Next to each sin, the price that is owed is also listed—death. But there is another column on that list. Next to each and every sin it says, “paid in full by Christ.” As the old hymn says, “Jesus paid it all."

We were dead in our sins. Our sins were debts that we were powerless to pay. But isn’t it great to read that “God made us alive together with him”? Just as Jesus was once dead but is now alive, we who were once dead in our trespasses are now alive in Christ!

As descendants of Adam, we were all born into sin and we were doomed to death because of it. Thanks be to God that He made a way for us to live! “For as in Adam all die, so also in Christ shall all be made alive” (1 Corinthians 15:22).

In 1 Peter 2:24, Peter put it this way, “He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, that we might die to sin and live to righteousness. By his wounds you have been healed.” Because Jesus bore our sins in His own body, when He was nailed to the cross, our sins were also nailed there. The debt of death that we owed was paid by Him for us once and for all. There is nothing more that we have to do or can do about our sins. In fact, Jesus’s last words on the cross were, “It is finished” (John 19:30).

Why would God do this for us? Because He loves us. “But God shows us his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us” (Romans 5:8).

Friends, God knows all of the sins that you have committed and He knows all of the sins that you will commit in the future. He was willing to die for those sins in order to offer you forgiveness. There isn’t anything you have done or will do that is shocking to Him. There is nothing you can do to save yourself. So accept His offer of forgiveness and rest in the peace of knowing that your record of debt has been paid in full. It is a done deal.

Pray

Jesus, I confess that I have sinned against You. And yet, in Your great love and mercy, You nailed my sins to the cross and died in my place. I can’t repay You but I do thank and praise You for my new life in You. Amen.
