Let’s Stick Together
Read Hebrews 10:24-25 (ESV)
And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near.
What are some ways that believers can be a mutual encouragement to one another when they meet together?
The world can be such a discouraging place. In fact, Jesus told us that in this world we will have trouble (John 16:33). That is why I am so grateful that God places fellow believers in our lives to be a source of encouragement and support. Even in the perfection of the Garden of Eden, God knew that it was not good for man to be alone (Genesis 2:18).
Because we were made for community, the author of Hebrews reminded us that we should not stop meeting together. Without the encouragement of other believers, it can be incredibly tempting to give up or compromise! We need each other if we are going to stay the course in the face of hardships and persecution.
But notice that today’s verse doesn’t say “Consider what love, good works, and encouragement others can give to you.” Fellowship is a two-way street. The tone of this verse is of mutual love, mutual good works, and mutual encouragement. The author is asking the readers to consider what they personally can do to spur on their brothers and sisters in Christ.
Friends, the promise is Christ’s return. Our great hope is that He comes soon! But one thing is for sure, with each passing day, the “Day” is getting closer. In the meantime, we need to stick together. We need to stay in fellowship with other believers. And we need to ask ourselves what we can do to contribute to the encouragement and edification of the body of Christ. We need each other.
Jesus, above all we need You. But we also need each other. Thank You for the gift of my brothers and sisters in Christ. Help me to be an encouragement and a support to those who need it today. Amen.
