Our Helper

Read John 14:15-17 (ESV)

If you love me, you will keep my commandments. And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, to be with you forever, even the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, for he dwells with you and will be in you.

How does the Holy Spirit help us?

Have you ever cried out to God for help? Sometimes, it seems as if God is far away and He’s just left us on our own down here to fend for ourselves. But that could not be farther from the truth! If we believe in Jesus, God is not far away. He lives inside of you!

In today’s verse, Jesus was comforting His disciples. Jesus had just told them that He was leaving them and that they could not go where He was going (John 13:33). He was returning to the Father. But He did give them some encouragement. He promised them that He would return someday to get them so they would be together again (John 14:2-3). But they must have been thinking, But what are we supposed to do without You until then?

Jesus didn’t leave them wondering. He offered further encouragement by saying that if we believe that Jesus is one with the Father (if we believe Jesus is God) then Jesus will ask the Father to send to them “another Helper.” While He was on earth, Jesus had been their Helper. Now that He was leaving them, He assured them that the Father would send them another. This is the Trinity in action.

God the Son prayed to God the Father to send them a Helper which Jesus clarified is the “Spirit of truth.” Even better, Jesus said that the Spirit of truth would be with them forever! Jesus may have been leaving them, but God was not deserting them. The Spirit of God was coming to abide with them and in them.

I know that at times it may seem like God has left you on your own. But remember, “it is the LORD your God who goes with you. He will not leave you or forsake you” (Deuteronomy 31:6). God has not left us. He is still here to help us. Friend, His Spirit lives in You!

God, thank You for not deserting me. You have not left me, but You have given me a Helper. Lead me through Your Holy Spirit to live in a way that glorifies You. Amen.
