Redeemed

August 10

Read Colossians 1:14 (ESV)

...in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.

Reflect

What does redemption mean?

The idea of being held for ransom is the stuff of nightmares for many of us. Sadly, too many people have experienced this atrocity. They may have been kidnapped and held prisoner or they may have been forced to subject themselves to slavery out of sheer desperation. Either way, in order to be freed from captivity, a price has to be paid. Redemption means to “buy back” in order to obtain freedom.

Yesterday, we talked about how Jesus delivered us from Satan’s dark domain and transferred us to the kingdom of Jesus. Jesus is the King of Kings who rules over a domain of light and truth. In today’s verse, Paul goes on to say that in this King, Jesus, we have redemption and the forgiveness of sins.

You see, all of us were held captive by our sin. We were slaves to our flesh. Through sin, we served Satan, the ruler of this world. We weren’t able to save ourselves. We were stuck in the domain of darkness. Hopeless. The only way out was if someone paid our ransom and bought us back. The ransom price was costly. Death was required. According to Romans 6:23, the wages of sin is death.

The Good News of the Gospel is that Jesus Christ paid our ransom when He died on the cross for our sins. He paid the price we owed but couldn’t pay. Peter explained: “...you were ransomed from the futile ways inherited from your forefathers, not with perishable things such as silver or gold, but with the precious blood of Christ, like that of a lamb without blemish or spot (1 Peter 1:18-19).

We needed perfect, sinless blood to pay our ransom and we didn’t have it. But Jesus did. He paid our ransom, He bought us back, and He is faithful to forgive us. When we accept His offer of forgiveness, He doesn’t just buy us back from sin but He cleanses us from sin. 1 John 1:1-9 says: “This is the message we have heard from him and proclaim to you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all. If we say we have fellowship with him while we walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth. But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin. If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”

Friends, we don’t have to walk in darkness forever. We don’t have to be slaves to our sin. In Christ, we can be forgiven and free! We can be in the light as He is in the light because we have been redeemed.

Pray

Lord, I know that I don’t deserve forgiveness and yet, You offer it anyway. Thank You for paying my ransom so that I can be set free from the power of sin and death. Amen.
