Somebody Needs You

Read 1 John 3:16-18

By this we know love, that he laid down his life for us, and we ought to lay down our lives for the brothers. But if anyone has the world's goods and sees his brother in need, yet closes his heart against him, how does God's love abide in him? Little children, let us not love in word or talk but in deed and in truth.

Reflect

How do we love “in deed and in truth”?

Some Christ-followers have this idea that we’re supposed to live our lives in a safe bubble, separated from the rest of the world. Yet God wants us to pop our bubbles and “lay down our lives.”

God is counting on us to engage the planet for Him—offering acceptance and a listening ear, preparing a hot meal, providing shelter for the homeless. Somebody needs you. More precisely, somebody needs a fresh encounter with the God you serve. “And the King will answer them, ‘Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brothers, you did it to me’” (Matthew 25:40).

So, how should you reach out? Begin by telling your story to someone you meet. Tell what you’re all about, what Christ is all about. Next, let your actions speak love. Be kind, be generous—take a step out of your comfort zone. Invite someone to church and even offer to give them a ride; share your possessions; invite them into your home ... you get the idea. (Be smart, of course, avoiding a situation that could endanger your life.)

Pray

Lord, help me to care about my brothers and sisters. Help me to lay down my life for You. Amen.
