There's An App For That: How Do I Grow As A Christian? | 2 Peter 1:9

2 Peter 1:9
But if anyone does not have them, he is nearsighted and blind, and has forgotten that he has been cleansed from his past sins.

How Can I Grow as a Christian? Don’t take God’s grace for granted!

In his second letter, Peter gives seven qualities that need to be added to God’s gift of faith. The believer should be growing in goodness, knowledge, self-control, perseverance, godliness, brotherly kindness and love (see yesterday’s devotional for a discussion of these qualities).

If these virtues are not demonstrated in a believer’s life, Peter notes that three problems exist. First, the believer is “nearsighted.” He is focused on temporal rather than eternal things. Second, the believer is “blind.” He is neglecting to address critical areas of his life. Third, the believer has spiritual amnesia. He has “forgotten that he has been cleansed from his past sins.”

Christian growth cannot take place when there is shortsightedness, blindness, and/or spiritual amnesia. We must do the things we need to do in order to grow in essential spiritual qualities. This one and only life is a great gift from God! There is not a day to waste.

Father, show us where we are nearsighted and correct our vision. Show us where we are blind, and open our eyes. Don’t ever let us forget the great work of Jesus in cleansing us from our past sins. Grow us, we pray! In Jesus’ name. Amen.
