Community: What Does It Look Like? | Matthew 3:16-17 | Devotional

Matthew 3:16-17 As soon as Jesus was baptized, he went up out of the water. At that moment heaven was opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and lighting on him. And a voice from heaven said, “This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased.”

Community is not a Christian buzz word or church program. The essence of community is found in the person of God. In the divine community, there is complete oneness with different responsibilities; yet the Father, Son, and Spirit never work independently of each other. The Father is at the forefront of creation, yet the Son and Spirit are involved. The Spirit is at the forefront of the believer’s spiritual growth, yet the Father and Son are involved. As we see in today's passage, the Son is at the forefront of our salvation, yet the Spirit and the Father are involved.

And man is created in the image of God. That's why when God looked at Adam as a solitary being he said, "It is not good for the man to be alone." Adam, as one being, could not live in community. He needed another person to complete him. As one commentator says, "The man was thus created in such a way that he needs the help of a partner. Or we may say that human beings cannot fulfill their destiny except in mutual assistance" (Ross, Creation and Blessing, 126).

Life with God was never meant to be lived solo. It is not good for the man to make the journey alone. You can't carry the burden alone, avoid temptation alone, deal with sin alone, bear the pain alone. And when you are alone, your focus is zeroed in on you. Aloneness is a solitary, selfish, and destructive journey. Made in the image of God, you were made for community.

Father, I pray for the person today who is physically, emotionally, and/or spiritually alone. Help them to lay down their pride and find another believer to give them the mutual assistance needed. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
