The Secret of Being Content

Read Philippians 4:11-13

I am not saying this because I am in need, for I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances. I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want. I can do all this through Him who gives me strength.


Are you feeling content right now? Why or why not?

I must admit that I am a work in progress when it comes to contentment. During quarantine, I have discovered just how much it takes for me to be content. Even though my family was healthy, we had a home, we had more than enough food and clothing, I was not content. I found things to grumble about. “We can’t go anywhere! We can’t do anything! We are just stuck inside this house!” I probably sounded a lot like my children who claim they are bored all day when they are surrounded by their toys.

I can learn a lot from Paul in his letter to the Philippians. He wrote this while he was in a Roman prison in approximately A.D. 61. He had a right to feel bored and trapped. And yet, instead of spending his time grumbling and complaining, he spent his time writing letters to encourage those he ministered to. Those letters were not only read by their intended recipients, they were read and circulated throughout the early church. Amazingly, they are still being read by the church today! I am sitting here in 2020 being encouraged as I read a copy of one of his letters!

So what is the secret to being content? The understanding that we can do all things because Christ gives us strength. I can learn to be content in any circumstance because Jesus sustains us. I can endure any hardship because Christ empowers me. 

These are hard times. I know that many people are struggling. But take heart! We know the secret to being content. You and I can do all this through Him who gives us strength!


Jesus, thank you for giving me strength. Help me learn to be content and satisfied with my circumstances because I know that You will sustain me. In You, I have everything I need. Amen.
