The Son of God
Read Matthew 3:16-17 (ESV)
And when Jesus was baptized, immediately he went up from the water, and behold, the heavens were open to him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and coming to rest on him; and behold, a voice from heaven said, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased.”
Why is it important for Jesus to be the Son of God?
My kids and I like to discuss how Jesus was fully God and fully man. But we admit that this truth blows our minds. Our finite minds can have a difficult time grasping infinite truth. But the Bible is clear that Jesus is a member of the Trinity. Jesus is God the Son.
When the angel, Gabriel, came to Mary, he announced: “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; therefore the child to be born will be called holy—the Son of God” (Luke 1:35). Before Jesus was even born, the angel declared Him to be God’s own Son.
But Gabriel wasn’t the only one to declare this truth about Jesus. As John the Baptist was baptizing crowds of people, Jesus came to be baptized as well. When Jesus came up out of the water, God Himself broke through the heavens and spoke in an audible voice to all who were gathered on the shore. In a rare moment, we see a picture of the complete Trinity. God the Father speaking, Jesus the Son there in the flesh, and the Holy Spirit descending as a dove. And what does God the Father say? “This is my beloved Son.”
In his Gospel, John talks about how Jesus was with God in the beginning and that He is the Creator of all things. But He left heaven and came into the world. “And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth” (John 1:14).
John began to close his Gospel reinforcing that truth. He even said that it was his purpose for writing it. In John 20:31, he said: “but these are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.”
Friends, Jesus is the Son of God! In His name there is life—eternal and abundant.
Jesus, I believe that You are the only Son of God and in Your name, I have everlasting life. To You be glory, majesty, and honor! Amen.
